From the days of 70’s to present, the GCC Economic boom has not halted for breathtaking moment until the global crisis. the construction industry in particular has seen tremendous growth by completing some of the world’s most iconic and complex projects .From the world’s tallest tower Burj Khalifa in Dubai  to the Bahrain’s World trade center with its inbuilt wind turbine technology , KSA’s remarkable  educational facilities for king Abdullah University for Science and technology (KAUST) and Education city in Qatar. Across the phase the methodology and the standards practiced have been pretty good.

 The resent years the call for the sustainability has been amplified much enough. As a result the Green regulations have been incorporated by DEWA Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Abu Dhabi’s Urban Planning Commission (UPC) as Estidama and Qatar’s Sustainable Assessment system. And hence the transformation begins.

Though the call could be tiring to meet the standards but it is towards the long term perspective and environmental consideration. The most common regulation practiced is US Leader in Energy and Environmental Design (Leed) and UK’s Building Research Establishment. The entire construction industry the developers, clients, consultants and contractors have been steered towards it. The designers are pushed in high demand to meet the requirements. One of the most critical challenges for the contractors is to make the availability of Sustainable building product. This is directly linked with raw material of product .further in the Middle East the long distance transportation has to be accounted. So it requires much more to deal with suppliers.

With the Arab upspring and political turmoil in GCC, Saudi Arabia Stands undisputed with a huge market worth of $110 Bn projects in 2012. And the international companies are yet in the state of turbulence to get set.

The technology development in HVAC and Water sector has seen significant implication on the industry in terms of energy and cost saving. Air-conditioning being the biggest consumer in building services the introduction of variable refrigerant flow has availed the building service engineers and designers to increase the HVAC efficiency, which cuts down the energy consumption up to 40%.

Looking at the merits, the green building carries the economical advantage by creating reduced cost and improved life cycle occupant. It preserves the cultural identity. Also it conserves and restores the natural resources.

Though the region is slowly adopting towards the shift there are number of initiatives taken. One of the evident steps taken is King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) is now the largest project in the world that is seeking green building accreditation. Last but not the least, to achieve the long lasting value and incredible quality the transformation towards the sustainability has to be cherished and there goes the Middle East to reach new heights.
